When you take a look at your credit report and you find out it is in pretty bad shape, the situation may seem hopeless. Rebuilding your credit can be a daunting task, but it can be done. It may take years to rebuild your good credit depending on how bad your finances have become. But by sticking to some basic goals and persevering, it is possible to make progress towards a better credit report. Start with the Basics One of the first things you can do is sit down and take a long hard look at your current financial situation. Go over your budget, your bills and anything you still owe such as past bills and credit cards. If you are over spending and living outside of your income, cut back. It may be a tight squeeze, but you will never get out of the bad credit cycle without stopping overspending. Creating a strict budget will help with overspending and splurge buying. Now you can take a look at how to start undoing the damage past spending habits or, even such unexpected events like unemployment, have done to your credit. Pay Back Time Now is the time to go over your credit report and make a list of creditors you still owe. Then start paying them back. It may be a slow process. You may be able to pay only one or two off completely. With others, you may have to start making small payments over a period of time. What is important is that you are making the attempt to erase the debt. Be faithful. Sending $5.00 every pay day to a creditor is better than nothing and shows the creditor you are making the effort. When you do manage to get a few outstanding debts paid off, make sure they are removed from your credit report. Pay Down Accounts If you have large accounts such as credit cards or auto loans, start paying them down. Make more than the monthly payment whenever possible. You do not want to be maxed out to your limit. In general, the less debt you have the better. You may even have to consider refinancing your home mortgage or taking out a second mortgage to help pay off other debt. But be careful when it comes to using your home as collateral for anything. If you can not afford the mortgage payment then you will lose your home on top of everything else. Cut the Credit Cards Credit cards can be big trouble for those with bad credit. Many times you get offers in the mail for cards that offer a whole world of promises. Avoid these like the plague! And if you already have several cards consider getting rid of several. Keep the oldest one and start paying down the other cards. Another option is to spread your balances out evenly over several cards so no one is close to its limit but you only owe a small amount on each one. Check for Mistakes Often there can be minor mistakes that can make a difference. Bills that were paid and listed as unpaid, late payments that were not late, and bills over seven years old that are still listed. Bankruptcies can stay on your credit report for ten years. Avoid Credit Although this may sound a bit strange when your goal is to be able to get your credit up to par so you can qualify for good financing, avoid seeking credit. While you are trying to clean up bad credit you should not apply for any financing. Each application will impact your credit scoring and make it appear that you are trying to overstretch yourself financially. Hang in There The best thing you can do is hang in there. Stick to your budget, keep up the payments, and do not give up. You will be in better financial shape before you know it. |
